C. H. Atma was a playback singer in Hindi cinema active for two decades since the fifties, remembered for his rich baritone voice and precise rendering.
Born in West Pakistan in 1933, he went to College in Karachi when music was still just a hobby. His first song as a playback singer came in 1955 with “Preetam Aan Milo” (“Mr&Mrs 55”, 1955). He idolised K.L. Saigal and was pleased that his voice resembled that of his hero. He also had a thriving career outside of films as a ghazal and geet singer.
“Roun Main Sagar Ke Kinare” (“Nageena”, 1951), “Is Bewafa Jahan Mein” (“Aasman”, 1952), “Panghat Pe More Shyam Bajayen Muraliya” (“Bilwa Mangal”, 1954) and “Mere Zindagi Ki Kashti” (“Bhumika”, 1977) are some of his hit songs. Shankar-Jaikishen, O.P. Nayyar, Neenu Majumdar, Khayyam, Vanraj Bhatia and Bulo C. Rani are a few of the music directors whose compositions he has lent his voice to.
