Lakshminarayana Vaidyanathan, fondly known as Vaidi, is an Indian music arranger, director and composer.
He was born in 1942 to V. Lakshminarayana and Seethalakshmi, who were both eminent Carnatic musicians. He and his two younger brothers, accomplished violinist duo, L. Shankar and L. Subramaniam were initially trained in classical music by his father. He was married to Chenjulakshmi and has two sons, L.V. Ganesan and L.V. Muthukumarasamy. He passed away on May 19, 2007.

He started his career in films as an assistant to the music director, G.K. Venkatesh and has since composed music for over 170 films in Tamil and Kannada. Some of his works can be seen in films like “Aparichita” in 1978, “Ezhavathu Manithan” in 1982”, “Ondhu Muthina Kathe” in 1987, “Pesum Padam” in 1988 and “Marupakkam” in 1990. He is known to have mixed sounds from various instruments like the mandolin, flute and violin even before the advent of hi-tech sound mixing technologies and equipment.
He is also best known for his composition of the title track for the popular 1986 television series “Malgudi Days”, which was based on the works of R.K. Narayan.
He used to collaborate with music director C. Ashwath for his work in Kannada films and the duo was known by the name of “Ashwath-Vaidi”.
In 2003, he was awarded the title of “Kalaimamani” by the Government of Tamil Nadu, for his contribution to cinema.
