Meerabai (c. 1498 – c. 1547AD) was a prominent figure in the Hindu Bhakti Movement. She was a Lord Krishna devotee and mystical singer of aristocratic origin. She was born as a Rajput princess in Kudki, Rajasthan to Ratan Singh Rathore, a warrior. She considered herself to be a reincarnation of a gopi, madly in love with Krishna. Legend has it that she was absorbed by the Lord Krishna deity at Dwarka in full view of a crowd of onlookers.
She captured the essence of her devotion in the bhajans/songs that she composed in honour of Lord Krishna. Meera’s songs are mostly in a mix of Rajasthani, Gujarati and Braj and are called “Padavali” with simple form and repeating refrains. Her songs mention the personal nature of her relationship with Krishna, whom she has accepted as her lover, lord and master. With notions of unconditional submission, her poetry speaks of the need to become one with Krishna.
Few of the bhajans composed by her are “Chando Langar”, “Mohe Lage Lagan”, “Payoji Maine”, “Darashan Dena”, “Chalo Mana”, “Heri Ma Darad Diva Na” and “Barasai Badariya Saavan Ki”.
