Meenu Purushottam was a playback singer in the Hindi film industry. Languages she has sung in include Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri and Sindhi among others.
Born into a family of farmers in Patiala, Punjab, she learnt classical music from Pandit Laxman Prasad Jaipurwalle. Once she came into the industry, it was music director Madan Mohan who trained her.
She debuted in Bollywood at the age of sixteen with the duet “Na Na Na Re” with Suman Kalyanpur in the film “Taj Mahal” (1963) for which Roshan was the music director and Sahir Kudhianvi, the lyricist.
She worked with music directors Laxmikant Pyarelal (“Kranti”, 1981), S. D. Burman (“Baat Ek Raat Ki”, 1962), O. P. Nayyar (“Yeh Raat Phir Naa Aayegee”, 1966), Bappi Lahiri (“Arman”, 1981) and Jaidev (“Do Boond Paani”, 1971) among others.
She has sung with singers like Manna De, Mohammed Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Suman Kalyanpur, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Chandrani Mukherjee, Hemalata, Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum.
