Kavi Pradeep was a poet and lyricist in the Hindi film industry who sparked nationalistic fervour in his audiences with his lines during the final years of the Indian independence struggle. Born in 1915 as Ramchandra Baryanji Dwivedi in Madhya Pradesh, he debuted with the film “Kangan” in 1939. However, he became a sensation after he penned patriotic songs like “Chal Chal Re Naujawan” in “Bandhan” (1940) and “Door Hato Ae Duniya Walon” in “Kismet” (1943).

While he’s best known for his patriotic and social-themed songs, he proved his versatility on a variety of subjects in his career spanning five decades that ended with him winning the Dada Saheb Phalke Life Achievement Award in 1997. Kavi Pradeep’s most memorable creation has been the patriotic number “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon” whose rendition by Lata Mangeshkar brought tears to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s eyes during the 1963 Republic Day celebration. While the song was composed by music director, C. Ramchandra, the opening tune of the song was in fact composed by Pradeep himself.
Kavi Pradeep died on 11 December 1998 in Mumbai at the age of 83.
