Nasik born and Mysore brought up Raghupathy Dixit never had music on his mind, never as a career, from most of his early life. A good student, he completed his schooling and went on to pursue higher studies in microbiology at Mysore University, which also brought him a gold medal. Many may not know that he worked as a scientist with Smithkline Beecham!
Though he loved listening to old school rock, especially Led Zeppelin, it wasn’t until he was 19 years of age that he began to sing on stage. While still in college, he began performing with violinist H.N. Bhaskar and flautist Ravichandra Rao, which later culminated into the band Antaragni in 1998.
During this time the indigenous rock scene in Bangalore, Karnataka, was almost nonexistent. Most bands that formed around this period played covers of songs by well known international bands. Antaragni was, at this time, the only band that played original songs, most of which were written and composed by Raghu Dixit himself. Their hallmark was to have opened for the Bryan Adams concert in Bangalore in early 2000s’. Antaragni disbanded in 2004 and since then, Raghu Dixit came up with a band called Raghu Dixit Project. It is described as an open house or a platform for musicians from different genres for performance and collaboration.
Some of the earliest numbers composed and sung by Antaragni were in Hindi or English, languages that Raghu Dixit was never as comfortable as his mother tongue, Kannada. Thus, he began singing and composing in his native language. His first few such attempts were to contemporarise the poetry of early 19th Century Kannada poet, Shishunala Sharif. He made his debut as a composer with the Kannada film “Psycho” (2007), of which the song “Maadeshwara” became a raging hit. The song “Murugan Superstar” (“Quick Gun Murugan”, 2009) was to be his first as a composer for a Hindi film.
Another Kannada film, the music for which he composed and got rave reviews for, was “Just Math Mathalli” (2009). The title song of this film ruled the charts for most of late 2009 and early 2010. His latest as a composer are for the Kannada film “Kote” (2011) and the Hindi film “Mujhse Fraandship Karoge” (2011), after which he plans to concentrate on the music for his band, the Raghu Dixit Project.
