Rupam Islam (born on 25 January 1974) is a Bengali playback singer who won the National Film Award for the Best Male Playback Singer in 2010 (for “Ei To Ami” in “Mahanagar@Kolkata”). He is also a composer, songwriter and the face of the hit Bengali rock band called Fossils.
Hailing from a lineage of musicians, he was a child artiste with Aakashvani and Doordarshan by the age of nine. His parents, legendary musicians, Nurul Islam and Chhandita Islam introduced him to music and made him a part of their choir Jhankar Shilpi Goshthhi by the time he turned four.
His band, Fossils - of which he is the lyricist, music composer and lead singer - was born in 1998 and all their five albums to date have been record breaking super hits. “Tor Bhorshate”, released by HMV in 1998, was his first solo album. Its popularity has resulted it in being re-released once as “Neel Rong Chhilo Bhishon Priyo” (2003) and a decade later in 2008.
Islam debuted in Bollywood with Kunal Deshmukh’s “Jannat” where he sang “Jannat Jahaan”. In 2009 he sang “Dil Kare” in Rohit Shetty’s “All The Best”. Married to friend Rupsha Dasgupta, their son Rup Aarohan Prometheus was born in 2010.
