Sanjay Leela Bhansali, born February 24, 1963, is an Indian film director who has directed six films since passing out of National Institute of Film and Technology (FTII). These films are “Khamoshi: The Musical” (1996). “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” (1999), “Devdas” (2002), “Black” (2005), “Sawariya” (2007) and “Guzaarish” (2010).
He turned music director in 2010 with his movie “Guzaarish”. He explains his decision not to use any other music director in the industry for this venture thus: “With ‘Guzaarish’ I felt I understood the characters and the situations extremely well and might not be able to translate the depth of those situations to any other music director. Thus I decided to give music for the film.”
He has said that he learnt music by repetitively listening to songs. His interest in music was greatly influenced by his association with R.D. Burman, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and composers Ismail Darbar and Monty Sharma.
The ten songs he composed for “Guzaarish” are "Guzaarish", "Sau Gram Zindagi", "Tera Zikr", "Saiba", "Jaane Kiske Khwaab", "Udi", "Keh Na Saku", "Chaand Ki Katori", "Daayein Baayein" and "Dhundhli Dhundhli". Sunidhi Chauhan won Zee Cine Award for Best Playback Singer for her rendition of the song “Udi” from this movie. Bhansali has said that while he has no favourites, the song “Sau Gram Zindagi” is close to his heart.
