Sapan Chakraborty is a music composer in Hindi and Bengali films. Not much is known of his early career but he rose in prominence when he joined R.D. Burman’s team as an assistant music director. He became a key member of R.D. Burman’s team and tried his hand at singing and even writing lyrics.
He worked under R.D. Burman as music assistant on several movies including “Anamika” (1973) and “Ghar” (1978). He also ventured out on his own and composed music for Hindi films like “Chhatees Ghante” (1974) and “Zameer” (1975).

R.D. Burman parted ways with Sapan Chakraborty towards the end of his career and Sapan moved to Calcutta to pursue a career as an independent music director in Bengali movies. According to various accounts, the end of their relationship was not amicable. Some have even accused Sapan of having a bad influence on R.D. Burman and negatively impacting his career.
Sapan Chakraborty passed away in 1995, a year after his mentor’s death.
