Born as Apeksha Rao on 11 April 1984 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, Shilpa is a playback singer in Bollywood.
Introduced to music by her father, she was a part of the choir at school. Following a concert with Shankar Mahadevan she moved to Mumbai on his suggestion. Singer Hariharan introduced Shilpa to his teacher Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and recommended his tutelage.

A career that began with advertising jingles, soon stepped into Bollywood. Renditions like “Tosey Naina Lagey” in the movie “Anwar” (2006), “Saiyaan Re” in “Salaam-e-Ishq” (2007), “Khuda Jaane” in “Bachna Ae Haseeno” (2008) and “Dhol Yaara Dhol” and “Ranjhana” in “Dev D” (2009) all served to make her more popular. Other than Hindi she has proved her mettle in Tamil and Bengali.
She bagged the Best Female Playback Singer Award at the Star Screen Awards in 2008 for the song “Khuda Jaane” from the movie “Bachna Ae Haseeno”(2008).
