Born Sujata Bhattacharya, Madhushree is a Bengali Brahmin from Kolkata whose parents Amarendranath and Parbati Bhattacharya were her first teachers. A gold medalist in classic music, she has sung some very popular songs in the films “Rang De Basanti”, “Kal Ho Naa Ho” and “Guru”. She debuted as a playback singer in Rajesh Roshan’s “Moksha” she is remembered most for her rendition of “Kabhi Neem Neem” from Yuva (2004).
It was Sangeetacharya Pt. Amiya Ranjan Bandopadhyay of the Bishnupur Gharana who taught her classical music and she excelled in the styles Thumri and Khayal. Later on, as a part of her work with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations she was sent to Surinam to teach classical music. She is married to Robby Badal who is an engineer and a music director.
Under the able guidance of music director A.R. Rahman, Madhushree’s songs were an instant hit in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Few of her chartbuster songs include “Tum Bin Bataye”, “Hum Hain Iss Pal Yahan”, “Kabhi Neem Neem”, “Mahi Ve”, “Tumhe Aaj Maine Jo Dekha”, “Tum Mujhe Bas Yuhi”, “Pal Pal Hai Bhari” and “Vaaji Vaaji”. Her career in playback singing includes songs from “Yuva”, “Aayitha Ezhuthu”, “Anbe Aaruyire”, “Aalwar”, “Deepavali”, “Sarvam”, “Unnale Unnale” and “Sivaji”. She has lent her voice to the creations of all major music directors in the industry including Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Rajesh Roshan, Salim-Suleiman, Pritam, Vishal-Shekhar, M.M. Kreem, Anand-Millind and more. In the south she has worked with Vidya Sagar, Harris Jairaj, Yuvan Shankar, Kartik Raja, Deena, Deva and many more.
She has won many accolades like the Best Female Playback Singer by The Hub for “Marudhani” (2009) Best Female Singer by AV MAX for “Tu Bin Bataye” from “Rang De Basanti” (2006) and Sony Stardust Award for Best Female Playback Singing Sensation in 2005.
