Majrooh Sultanpuri used a couplet written by Sahar Bhopali in the second antara of this song - "Seene mein dil hai dil mein daagh daaghon mein soz-o-saaz-e-ishq / Parda ba parda hai pinhaan parda nashin ka raaz-e-ishq".
Johnny Walker, on whom the song was to be filmed, was unhappy when he found out that S.D. Burman intended to use Manna Dey's voice for it. Walker preferred Mohammed Rafi given his successful track record of performing songs sung by him. He asked S.D. Burman to use Rafi's voice instead but the composer refused to budge. When director Shankar Mukherjee attempted to intervene on Walker's behalf, Burman offered to quit the film. He eventually had his way and had Manna Dey sing the song.[MR21]
