- The lyrics of this song were written before its tune was composed. Amitabh Bhattacharya came up with the song's catchy title while brainstorming with producer Aamir Khan and music director Pritam at Aamir's bungalow in Panchgani. They considered several options to describe Khan's character in the film but were not happy with any of them - "Phas gaye re bapu", "Hitler bapu", "Bapu Mogambo", and "Hunter wala bapu". Finally, it was while taking a smoke break that Amitabh Bhattacharya spotted the statutory warning on the cigarette pack and came up with the song's title.[1]
- Amitabh Bhattacharya adapted the mukhda of a Sahir Ludhianvi song from the film "Ankhen" (1960) for the opening lines of this song. "Gairon pe karam apnon pe sitam / Ae jaane-e-wafa yeh zulm na kar" in the original song became "Auron pe karam bachchon pe sitam / Re bapu mere yeh zulm na kar" in this song.[2]
