Trivia

  • Syed Nazir Ali Rizvi took on the screen name Ratan Kumar for his Hindi film career. He thrived as a child artist in the first half of the 1950s, acting in films like "Sargam" (1950), "Afsana" (1951), "Baiju Bawra" (1952), "Boot Polish" (1953) and "Do Bigha Zamin" (1953). This song, filmed on him, was one of the highlights of his career. Nazir Ali migrated with his family to Pakistan in the mid-1950s. The Pakistani remake of this song, "Yun Di Hamen Azadi" ("Bedari", 1956), was also filmed on him. Ali migrated to the USA in 1979 and died there in 2016.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
  • While this song was a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, its Pakistani version, "Yun Di Hamen Azadi" ("Bedari", 1956), was dedicated to Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The line "Sabarmati ke sant tune kar diya kamaal" in the original song was replaced with "Ae Quaid-E-Azam tera ehsaan hai ehsan" in the plagiarised version. The Pakistani film was banned shortly after its release but "Yun Di Hamen Azadi" ("Bedari", 1956) gained popularity several decades later when someone decided to air it on PTV (Pakistan Television Corporation). Sayed GB Shah Bokhari, a member of the Censor Board of Pakistan at the time, informed PTV about the song's controversial history and got it banned by the state TV. However, it continues to be popular in Pakistan as a tribute to Jinnah.[7]
