This was Chandrashekhar Gadgil's first Hindi film song. R.D. Burman had to spend a few days convincing director Chetan Anand to give the young singer a chance before he gave the go-ahead. Unfortunately for Gadgil, Chetan Anand changed his mind later on and asked Burman to record the song in Mohammed Rafi's voice instead. Burman then called Rafi to record the song. After singing three antaras of the song, Rafi overheard someone at the studio talking about how the song had been previously recorded by another singer. He enquired with Burman and when he found out what had happened, he refused to sing the fourth antara of the song because he did not want to jeopardise a young singer's career. Rafi's version of the song was used only in the film since Burman was insistent that he would include only Gadgil's version in the film's audio release. There were a few differences between the two versions of the song - they were arranged slightly differently, Gadgil's version had four antaras and Rafi's had three antaras, and one of the antaras in Rafi's version was completely different.[1]
