Mukesh suffered a heart attack while performing this song at a stage show in Detroit, USA. Without disrupting the song, he called his son Nitin Mukesh to complete it and went backstage. He was hospitalised but succumbed the next day, on August 27, 1976.[MR6]
This song was recorded in 1967 a few years before the film was released. Mukesh first performed it live at the Filmfare Awards function in June 1967. By the time the film came out in 1970, the song was already a big hit.[MR10]
Shankar - Jaikishan had used the tune of this 1970 song for the background score of a few Raj Kapoor productions in the past, including "Aah" (1953).[1]
Hasrat Jaipuri had written additional stanzas for this song other than the two that were recorded and filmed. Mukesh used to sing one of the extra stanzas in his live shows.
