A.R. Rahman was supposed to compose a song for the scene in which Waheeda Rahman's character in the film finds out about her son's death. He suggested to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra that he compose a mellow lullaby instead of a sad song. While many in the team disagreed with this approach, Rakeysh agreed, and the result was a song that worked very well in the film even though it didn't exactly match the scene's mood.[MR16]
While coordinating with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra for the song's recording, Lata Mangeshkar was surprised to find out that he had filmed it already even though it hadn't been recorded yet. She asked in wonder, "Aisa bhi hota hai aajkal?". When they finally scheduled the recording dates at A.R. Rahman's studio in Chennai, she landed in the city four days in advance and came to the studio every day to rehearse the song. According to Mehra, the recording took 8 hours and the aging singer spent that entire duration in front of the mic.[1]
