Woh Baarishein - Single

With the release of “Woh Baarishein”, Mumbai singer-composer Arjun Kanungo adds a monsoon-themed piano ballad to his canon of party starters (“Baaki Baatein Peene Baad”) and lovelorn anthems (“Aaya Na Tu” and “Tu Na Mera”). Kanungo, who collaborated with lyricist Manoj Muntashir on this track, tells Apple Music about what he describes as “the saddest song” he’s released. Heartbreak Hero Strings mark “Woh Baarishein”, an intense chronicle of love and loss. While sonically it’s a departure from his typically synth-laden, uptempo tunes, it furthers his evolution into a heartbreak specialist. Kanungo says he’s simply giving listeners what they want to hear. “The most popular ballads in India are the ones based on heartbreak,” he says. “It’s not like we’re sad in our lives, it’s just the association we have with that kind of music.” Monsoon Memories The sorrow-filled song’s title and lyrics suggest that Kanungo links the monsoon with melancholy, but the rising pop star clarifies that he connects the rainy season with nostalgia. “We all have monsoon memories, something we do that we wait for every year, like for example having chai on the balcony,” he says. “But nostalgia can be emotionally painful as well.” Vision of Love Kanungo depicts this range of emotions in the music video for the track, which stars actress Shriya Pilgaonkar as his love interest. “Everything happens organically,” he says. “I think of the concept while the song’s taking shape.” The Bollywood Influence Kanungo’s videos are like four-minute short movies and there’s always a twist at the end. So we ask him if there’s a Hindi film style he aims for. “It’s going to look like that because Bollywood is an aesthetic that everybody understands,” he says. “You can’t have something that’s completely alien to an audience when you’re making it for that audience.”
