Anand-Milind is the name of a Bollywood music composer duo. Brothers in real life, their names are Anand Srivastav and Milind Srivastav.
They learnt music from their father, Chitragupta Shrivastava, who was a well known music director of the ‘60s. They had to struggle during their early days for work and recognition, especially between 1982 and 1988. Anand is an expert guitar player while Milind is an ace piano player.
The duo made their debut with the film “Ab Aayega Mazaa” in 1984. Their biggest success came with the film “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” in 1988 which included songs like "Papa Kehte Hain", "Ghazab Ka Hai Din", and "Akele Hai To Kya Gham Hai", which won them the Filmfare Award for Best Music.
With their music in the film “Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka” in 1989, began a period of close collaboration with Gulshan Kumar. The songs “Chaandini Raat Hai”, “Kaisa Lagta Hai Acha Lagta Hai” in “Baaghi”, “Aaj Na Chodenge Tujhe Dum Duma Dum”, “Khambe Jaise Khadi Hai” and ”O Priya Priya” in the 1990 film “Dil”, “Koyal Si Teri Boli” and “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” in the 1992 Anil Kapoor starrer “Beta” cemented their place in Bollywood as bankable music directors.
Some of the other notable movies of that time were “Love” in 1991, “Anjaam”, “Suhaag” and “Madhosh” in 1994. They also composed music for a few Bhojpuri films.
They have often been accused of copying music from A. R. Rahman, Illayaraja and also Western artists. This, some say, could have been a cause of their downfall. In spite of this, they commanded the loyalty of producers like Nitin Manmohan and Nandu Tolani who worked with them on almost all their films during the 1990s. They also shared a great rapport with producer-director Suneel Darshan for whom they composed some great scores in movies like “Lootere” in 1993, “Ajay” in 1996 and “Jaanwar” in 1999. Vashu Bhagnani’s films like “Coolie No.1” and “Hero No.1” also featured some blockbuster hits from this duo. They were also regular composers for Dr. D. Rama Naidu in films like “Taqdeerwala”, “Rakhwala”, “Prem Qaidi”, “Santaan” and “Anari”.
The duo has even composed some highly acclaimed songs in the Telegu movie “Idhi Maa Ashok Gadi Love Story”. They made a comeback of sorts with “Tum Hi To Ho” in February 2011.
