Trivia

  • This iconic song wasn't originally part of the film. The film kicked off with three songs - "Hum Hi Mein Thi Na Koi Baat", written by the Pakistani poet Hafeez Jalandhari, and two songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri. In fact, according to writer and columnist Raju Bharatan, the first line of this song was actually written by Hasrat Jaipuri. When director Vijay Anand expressed his dissatisfaction with Hasrat's lyrics, the lyricist had an argument with him and walked out of the film. Shailendra, who asked for one lakh rupees more than the amount Hasrat had been signed for, was then brought in to write lyrics for the film. He wrote a new song for this situation but retained the opening line written by Hasrat. Hafeez Jalandhari's song was not used since it did not fit in the film's context. Years later, it was set to tune and sung by Mehdi Hassan. Jagjit and Chitra Singh also recorded a song using the lyrics of Hafeez Jalandhari's ghazal.[1][MR4][MR21]
