Trivia

    Album

  • This was the most expensive as well as the highest-grossing Indian film of its time. It was among Mehboob Khan's most ambitious projects. It was his first film in colour. The film was shot in 16mm Gevacolor and printed abroad in Technicolor. (India's first Technicolor film, "Jhansi Ki Rani" (1953) was released the next year.) Mehboob spared no expense in the film's musical score either. Naushad famously used 100-piece orchestras for its background music. This was the first Hindi film to have its songs mixed out of India, in London. The results were spectacular. It was released in the US and UK with the title "Savage Princess". Its opulent sets and expansive storytelling drew comparisons with epics like "Duel In The Sun" (1946)", "The Red Shoes" (1948) and "Quo Vadis" (1951). This was the first Hindi film to be dubbed in Tamil. Its title in Tamil was "Aan". It was also dubbed and released in French as "Mangalla Fille Des Indes" (1954). The American actor and filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille wrote these words of praise to Mehboob after watching the film - "I believe it is quite possible to make pictures in your great country which will be understood and enjoyed by all nations without sacrificing the culture and customs of India. We look forward to the day when you will be regular contributors to our screenfare with many fine stories bringing the romance and magic of India.".[1][2][3][MR8]
  • An early promotion for the film listed Nargis, Nimmi and Nadira in lead roles. However, Nargis backed out of the film at some point. It is unclear what roles the three actresses were supposed to play since the film had only two female leads. This was actress Nadira's debut film.
  • The film's financiers and distributors were disappointed to see the death of Nimmi's character before the climax. Such was her popularity at the time that Mehboob Khan had to give in to their demands of incorporating a newly shot dream sequence to extend her screen time in the film.[4]
