Amol Palekar, Shabana Azmi and Soni Razdan's characters in this film were named after their real names.[MR12]
Vidhu Vinod Chopra got a lot of appreciation for this film but it remained unsold for more than a year. He finally decided to distribute the film himself. He rented out Regal Cinema in Bombay where the film played for two weeks. While the film was playing there, he did a few other deals to distribute the film elsewhere in the country. It was during this time that a frustrated Chopra decided to make a commercial film next and started writing the film that became "Parinda" (1989).[1][2]
This was a songless film.
The film opened with a dedication to sound recordist Mangesh Desai who died in October 1985. It also carried a dedication that simply read "For Renu". This was evidently Renu Saluja, the film's editor and filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra's ex-wife.
