Trivia

    Album

  • This film was plagued by many problems and took four years to complete. One of the challenges was related to the film's music. Early on in the film's making, Lata Mangeshkar, who did the muhurat for the film, indicated to Gulzar that she would not be able to sing for it. It was only later that Gulzar found out her reason for declining to sing - she had already sung for two non-film albums of Meera bhajans, and she felt that her singing for a commercial film would dilute her previous work. Gulzar had initially engaged music directors Laxmikant - Pyarelal to compose the music for the film. The duo tried to convince Lata Mangeshkar to sing for the film, but when she declined again, the composers walked out of the project. Gulzar's friend R.D. Burman also did not want to compose music for the film. This left Gulzar and the film's producer Premji in a quandary. Eventually, someone thought of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Since Ravi Shankar spent most of his time in the US, Gulzar visited him there, read him the film's script and got his OK to compose music for the film. By the time Gulzar left America, the recording schedule had been planned and so had Meerabai's voice - Vani Jayaram. The film's audio records were issued in 1977, but the film was released in 1979.[MR47]
  • Gulzar had initially gotten Amitabh Bachchan's agreement to play the role of Rana Bhojraj. However, he backed out later and had to be replaced by Vinod Khanna.
  • This film ran into a controversy when it was reported in the media that while Hema Malini was cast in the film, the eponymous role had been originally been written for Raakhee, director Gulzar's ex-wife. "Acting as Meerabai is one of my ambitions. I have studied her so thoroughly that nobody could know her the way I do. It is immaterial who is chosen to act the role, because Meerabai is mine in a special way-nobody can take her away from me.", Raakhee was quoted as saying in India Today.[1]
