Trivia

    Album

  • This was Ashim Ahluwalia's directorial debut. A lot of the ideas for the film came from the time he spent with crews of C-grade films while researching for a documentary on their underground industry. When the people he talked to refused to come on record for the documentary, Ahluwalia decided to make a film instead. The lead characters of this film were partly inspired by producer Kanti Shah and his brother Kishan Shah. Kanti Shah shot to fame with the film "Gunda" (1998), described by its fans as "so bad it's good". The two brothers produced and directed a number of low-budget, C-grade Hindi films in the 1990s and 2000s.[1][2][3]
  • The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012 in the Un Certain Regard section. It was released in theatres in India in January 2014 after being shown in various international film festivals.
  • The film did not feature any original music. Its soundtrack included songs and themes compiled by Edo Bouman. Ilaiyaraaja's Tamil film songs were featured prominently in the film. These included "Ilamai Edho Edho" ("Sakalakala Vallavan", 1982) sung by S.P. Balasubramanian, "Thanimayil" ("Azhage Unnai Aarathikkiren", 1979) sung by Vani Jayaram, and "Sorgam Madhuvile" ("Sattam En Kaiyil", 1978) sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam, among others. The soundtrack also featured the work of the Italian film composers Egisto Macchi and Piero Umiliani. The film included snippets of three songs from Rupa Biswas Sen's album "Disco Jazz" which, after selling just a few copies in 1982, became an internet sensation decades later. Edo Bouman, who was credited as Music Consultant, was a record collector who also helped the re-discovery of another Indian album - Charanjit Singh's "Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat" (1982). The movie had a song sequence filmed on Nazia Hassan's pop song "Dum Dum Dee Dee" ("Young Tarang", 1984), produced by Biddu.[4][5][6]
  • This was the debut Hindi film of Niharika Singh, a participant of Miss India 2005 in which she won the title of Miss Earth India. She entered into a relationship with her co-actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui in 2009-2010 when the film was in production. During India's 2018 #MeToo campaign, Singh said that Nawazuddin had coerced her into a relationship. She claimed that she had broken up with him after she found out that he had lied to her about many things. Niharika and Nawazuddin worked together in another Hindi film, "Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa (Sniffer)" (2014).[7][8][9]
