- This film won the Grand Prize of the International Film Festival of Cannes, 1946. This award came to be known as Palme d'Or in later years.
- This was the debut film of director Chetan Anand, actress Kamini Kaushal and music director Pandit Ravi Shankar.
- Chetan Anand, whose wife Uma played a lead role in the film, didn't want another actress named Uma in the film. He, therefore, suggested that Uma Sood, the second female lead, choose a screen name for the film. Sood asked Anand to pick a name starting with the letter 'K' since her daughters were named Kumkum and Kavita. It was in these circumstances that actress Kamini Kaushal got her screen name.[1]
