This was a biopic of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the renowned freedom fighter and the founder of the Indian National Army. The film was directed by Hemen Gupta, a freedom fighter himself, who had worked closely with Bose in the late 1930s. Gupta had worked as Bose's personal secretary and talked to him about using cinema as a medium of communication. Bose, in turn, had introduced Gupta to B.N. Sircar, the founder of New Theatres. Gupta started his film career in New Theatres as an assistant director to Debaki Bose. This film was Gupta's dream project but failed due to financial constraints. It ended up being his last Hindi film.[1]
