Trivia

    Album

  • The film was adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1866 novel "Crime And Punishment".
  • Since this was a Raj Kapoor film, Shankar - Jaikishan were the first choice to compose its music. However, Sahir convinced director Ramesh Saigal to pick Khayyam instead. He argued that Khayyam had read "Crime And Punishment", the book on which the film was based, and was better equipped to bring out its essence in the film's music. As was the norm in those days, Saigal wanted Raj Kapoor's approval for this. Khayyam had to pass Raj Kapoor's "test" of tuning a tanpura and playing his compositions to be selected for the film.[1][MR5]
  • Pleased by Khayyam's music for this film, Raj Kapoor invited him and his wife Jagjit Kaur for dinner. At the party, Jagjit Kaur sensed the discomfiture of Jaikishan of the Shankar - Jaikishan music director duo and told Khayyam about it. According to Khayyam, Jaikishan felt that the duo's relationship with Raj Kapoor was in jeopardy. Not wanting to adversely impact the relationship between Raj Kapoor and Shankar - Jaikishan, he and Jagjit Kaur left without informing their hosts. Raj Kapoor took offence at this and never worked with Khayyam again.[2]
  • The film opened with an acknowledgement that was unusual for the period - "Our sincere thanks to Shri A.G. Desai of Quality Labs for his co-operation in producing this picture - Parijat Pictures"
  • This was a rare film in which actor Mubarak had a writing credit. He was credited along with filmmaker Ramesh Saigal for adapting the film's story from Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Crime And Punishment". He also played an important character in the film.

    Song

  • Woh Subah Kabhi Toh Aayegi (Duet) - Anu Malik recreated this song for the film "Begum Jaan" (2017). The cover version was sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal and had modified lyrics by Kausar Munir.[3]
  • Cheen-O-Arab Hamara Hindustan Hamara - Sahir Ludhianvi adapted lines from Allama Iqbal's "Tarana-E-Hind" and "Tarana-E-Milli" for the lyrics of this song.[4]
  • Jis Pyar Mein Yeh Haal Ho - The composition of this song was adapted by Iqbal Qureshi for the song "Phir Aane Laga Yaad Wohi Pyar Ka Aalam" ("Ye Dil Kisko Doon", 1963).[5]
