Trivia

    Album

  • This was Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee's first film together after around forty years. Prior to this, their last film together was "Manzil" (1977), which was released in 1979. They did make guest appearances in the film "Pet Pyar Aur Paap" (1984) in between.[1][2]
  • The film took its title from a short film directed by Satyajit Ray in 1980 for a French television channel. Ray's film itself was based on his short story "Pikoor Diary". Director Shoojit Sircar acknowledged Ray's influence in the film as well.[3]
  • Shoojit Sircar did not want an interval in the film but was advised against it by the producers. He rued the fact that many in the audience missed a key scene right after the interval because "they were in the popcorn line".[4]
  • Shoojit Sircar had initially offered the film's titular role to Parineeti Chopra. She had refused the offer since its schedule conflicted with another film she was supposed to do. Sircar had then brought Deepika Padukone on board. The film was a big hit and Padukone ended up winning several awards for her work in it, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Parineeti later regretted turning the film down as even the other film did not materialise.[5][6]
  • The name of Amitabh Bachchan's character in the film was the same as that of his character in "Anand" (1970) - Bhaskar Banerjee. According to Shoojit Sircar, this was just a "happy coincidence".[7][8]
  • This was music director Anupam Roy's first Hindi film soundtrack. He had worked extensively in Bengali films prior to this.
