• This film was an adaptation of Khushwant Singh's book of the same title. The book was originally published in 1956. Several directors, including Shashi Kapoor, Ismail Merchant, Satyajit Ray and a Japanese director, had expressed an interest to adapt the novel to screen in the past, but none of their plans had worked out for one reason or the other.[1]
• The film's release was delayed due to objections raised by the Censor Board. Director Pamela Rooks had approached the film tribunal when the censor board had asked for 38 cuts. The tribunal had sided with Rooks and the film was eventually released with only a few audio changes.[2]
