Trivia

    Album

  • This film was adapted from two Sanskrit plays - "Charudatta" written by Bhasa in around the 4th century CE, and "Mrichchhakatika" written by Shudraka in around the 5th century. "Mrichchhakatika" itself was supposed to have been built on "Charudatta".
  • Shashi Kapoor had wanted Amitabh Bachchan to play the role of Samsthanak in this film. However, when Amitabh got injured during the making of "Coolie" (1983), he ended up playing the role himself.
  • This was Girish Karnad's first solo work in Hindi films as a director. He had earlier co-directed the film "Godhuli" (1977) along with B.V. Karanth.[1]
  • This was the first Hindi film of the child artist Master Manjunath. He had acted in Kannada films before. Master Manjunath would go on to gain mainstream popularity with the Doordarshan TV serial "Malgudi Days" (1987), in which he played the role of Swami.
  • This was actor Shekhar Suman's debut Hindi film.
  • The making of this film was plagued by many problems. It was delayed, went over-budget and eventually suffered huge financial losses. Shashi Kapoor stayed away from producing films for a long time after this film. His next film "Ajooba" (1991) was also his last film as a producer.[2]
  • This film was shot simultaneously in Hindi and English.
