He was born on 15 March 1956 in Kolkata and given musical training under Ustad Moosa Hussain Khan, Amanat Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan. Since music as a profession was not acceptable to his family, he left home and moved to Patna where he was with AIR for 5 years.
He then moved to Delhi and took to singing in hotels for a living. As luck would have it, ghazal singer Talat Aziz happened to hear Dass’ rendition one day and thus began his career.
He debuted in 1982 with the album “Introducing Chandan Dass”. He then went on to release 15 more albums. He has lent his voice to both films and television.
