G.M. Durrani was a playback singer in the Hindi film industry active during the 1930s and 1940s.
He started his career as a singer on All India Radio (AIR). He got his first offer to sing in a film when noted producer, director Sohrab Modi heard him sing on the radio. This was before the era of playback singing and so G.M. Durrani made his debut as singer and actor in the film “Saed E Hawas” (1936).
Durrani sang for films through the 1930s but continued to hold his job in AIR. When playback singing was introduced in films by and his work in films became a lot more lucrative, Durrani gave up his AIR job and started singing for films full-time
Over the years Durrani worked for music directors like Naushad, A.R. Qureshi, Khurshid Anwar, Khayyam and Shankar Rao Vyas. His popular songs include “Lara Lappa” (“Ek Thi Ladki”, 1949), “Baad Muddat Ke” (“Aaiye, 1949), “Nazar Phero Na Hum Se” (“Deedar”, 1951), “Raghukul Rit” (“Bharat Milap”, 1942) and “Aao Baitho” (“Maang”, 1950).
