Classical singer Kishori Amonkar was born to classical singer Mogubai Kudrikar of the Jaipur gharana. It is from her mother that she received her initial training in Hindustani music.
Although she is known for her classical singing, she has also dabbled with lighter forms of music, including film music. Her first film (and the only Hindi film song) as playback singer was “Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne” (1964), in which she sang the title song.
She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1987 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2002 and has also attained the title of ‘Vidushi’.
