Nadeem - Shravan have been among the most prolific music directors of Bollywood. They were popular during the 1990s and 2000s . They are known for their catchy songs that featured strong rhythm and melody. Well known playback singers such as Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Abhijeet, SP Balasubramanyam, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal and many others have sung under their banner.
Their association dates back to 1972 when they met each other at a function. Their first Hindi film assignment was 'Maine Jeena Seekh Liya' in 1981. They got their big break when they were given an opportunity to compose for three big films of 'Ilaka', 'Hisaab Khoon Ka' and 'Lashkar'.
Their composition for the movie ‘Aashiqui’ in the year 1990 brought Nadeem-Shravan into limelight. Gulshan Kumar gave them the break and the film saw the emergence of three superstars - Nadeem, Shravan and Kumar Sanu. The songs 'Sanson ki zaroorat', 'Nazar ke saamane jigar ke paas', 'Dheere dheere se meri zindagi me aana' were all big hits. Their rise to fame continued with 'Saajan', 'Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin', 'Sadak', 'Sainik', 'Raja', 'Dilwale' and 'Phool Aur Kaante'.
The duo were extremely versatile and have composed fast-track, sentimental and dance numbers. But their strength was always melody. Their music was easy on the ears and did not take time to impress the listeners. Just when they were losing their popularity, the duo answered their critics with their composition for the film ‘Pardes’ in the year 1997. The movie had runaway hits like ‘Do dil mil rahe hain’, ‘Ye dil Deewana’, ‘Nahin hona tha’ and ‘I Love my India’.
Nadeem-Shravan have won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the film ‘Aashiqui’ (1990), ‘Saajan’(1991),’Deewana’(1992) and ‘Raja Hindustani’(1996). The duo have insisted on sticking to lyricist Sameer and singers Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, and Kavita Krishnamurthy for most of their projects. They won the Screen Award for the film, ‘Pardes’. They also won the Zee Cine Award for the film, ‘Raaz’.
In 1997, the duo ran into negative publicity when Nadeem, while on vacation in London, England, was named as the man behind the murder of his former mentor, record executive Gulshan Kumar, the boss of T-Series Music Company. In mid 2002 Nadeem was acquitted and cleared of charges and any involvement in the Gulshan Kumar murder case by a court in the Indian city of Bombay.
In 2005, the duo split, apparently due to Shravan's disinterest in continuing with his music, and instead focusing on his son's acting career. Just when the industry had almost forgotten them, they made a comeback after a gap of two-and-a-half years with Kuku Kohli's new film "Yeh Dil Aashiqana". Mukesh Bhatt followed this up with signing them for 'Kasoor' and ‘Raaz’. They also composed music for ‘Ek Rishta’ and ‘Andaz’. Nadeem-Shravan have been accused of plagiarism on several occasions, some of their popular Hindi film songs have been inspired or copied from Pakistani singers, old time ghazals and western songs.
