Naresh Iyer was born on January 3, 1981 in Mumbai and grew up there. He always had an interest in music but had plans to complete his Chartered Accountancy before pursuing a career in music. However, a visit to Chennai to participate in Channel V’s Super Singer, accelerated his musical career significantly. While he did not win the competition, the program’s judge, ace composer, A.R. Rahman, offered him a song in his next film. Soon after the show, he got a call from Rahman’s team and went on to sing “Mayilirage” (“Anbe Aaruyire”, 2005).
Naresh Iyer had a dream Bollywood playback debut – 4 songs in a big movie, “Rang De Basanti” (2006), with music composed by A.R. Rahman. The film and music became blockbuster hits and Naresh Iyer won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his rendition of the song “Roobaroo” as well as the 2006 Filmfare R.D Burman Award for New Talent.
He decided to move to Chennai in 2006 as he had started getting many singing offers in regional films and also became a steady member in A.R. Rahman’s concert team.
Naresh continued to juggle many balls in the air, as the vocalist of the fusion band Dhvani, singing playback for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalami film and singing in A.R. Rahman’s concerts.
Some of his popular songs are "Roobaroo", "Paathshala" ("Rang De Basanti", 2005), "Pappu Can’t Dance" ("Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na", 2008), "Mundhinam Parthenae", "Yethi Yethi" ("Vaaranam Aayiram", 2008) and "Kannukkul Kannai" ("Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya", 2010).
