Satyam was a prominent music director in the Telugu and Kannada industry from 1960s through 1980s. He was popular as the “Andhra R.D. Burman”.
Born as Chellapilla Satyanarayana Sastryin Viazianagaram, Andhra Pradesh in 1933, he debuted as a music director in the Telugu film “Pala Manasulu” only in 1967 though he had worked as music director P. Adinarayana Rao’s assistant in “Suvarna Sundari” in 1957.
In the 1984 movie “Billa Ranga” S.P. Balasubramanium sang four Satyam compositions which were “Dekh Lo Mudke”, “Laila”, “Naam Mera Billa” and “Pyar Ka Tere”.
Some of the other movies he has composed music for include “Lady James Bond” (1972), “Pistolwaali” (1972), “Rani Aur Jaani” (1973), “Johny Mera Yaar” (1973), “Paanch Dost” (1974), “Khooni Kaun” (1974), “Alakh Niranjan” (1975), “Anokha Shiv Bhakt” (1978), “Bahadur Bachche” (1977), “Gunah Ki Raat” (1979), “Khoon Ki Holi” (1979), “Miss Toofan Mail” (1980) and “Mahashakti” (1980).
Lyricists he has worked with include B.R. Tripathi, Prem Dhawan, Hayat Warsi, Shashi, Sameer, Madhukar, Hari Malik, Keval, Sajan Dehlvi, Gaurav Mehta, Mohanlal Kaul, Hasrat Jaipuri and Pyarelal Santoshi.
