Shaan born as Shantanu Mukherjee into a Bengali Brahmin family in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh to the late music director Manas Mukherjee who died when Shaan was aged 13. Shaan’s grandfather was the lyricist Jahar Mukherjee. Shaan’s sister is the singer Sagarika and he is married to Radhika and has two sons Soham and Shubh. Shaan began his career by singing ad jingles.And then sang remixes and cover versions.
In 1989, Shaan sang a single line in the song, “Kitni Hai Pyari Dosti Hamari” (Parinda). Then Shaan and his sister Sagarika signed up for the album “Naujawan” which became a hit. This was followed by the album Q-Funk which sold a million copies. Shaan entered the pop scene with the aid of Biddu. Then the remix album of “Roop Tera Mastana” brought him more success. Shaan sang, composed the music and wrote the lyrics of his songs for both his super hit albums ” Tanha Dil” and “Aksar” which gave him more popularity. “Dil Kya Kare”, a remix gained more fame with its soothing melodies and “Mana Janab” with its Latino groove, gave Shaan more credibility as a star. Shaan has also composed music for many TV Serials.
Shaan got a chance to do a bit role in Kalpana Lajmi’s film, “Daman” and then he got his breakthrough with “Musu Musu” (Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi). His various other Bollywood hits in playback singing include, “ Yeh Hawein”(Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai), “Suno Na”(Jhankaar Beats), “ Dus Bahane” (Dus),“Main Aisa Kyon Hoon”(Lakshya), “Kaante”, “Dil Chahta Hai”, “In Panchiyon”(Koi Mil Gaya), “It’s the time”, ‘Kuch to Hua Hai”(Kal Ho Na Ho), “Ladki Kyon”(Hum Tum), “O Humdum”(Saathiya), “Shikdum”(Dhoom), “My Dil Goes(Salaam Namaste), “Main Hoon Don”(Don), “Chand Sifarish(Fanaa), “Where’s the Party”, “Rock n Roll Soniye”(Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna), “Om Shanti Om”, “Jab Se Tere”(Saawariya), “Aao Milo Chalo” (Jab We Met), “Behti Hawa Sa”(3 Idiots), “Bum Bum Bole”(Taare Zameen Par) and many more. Shaan has also given his voice to many hit Bengali, Nepali, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil film songs. He has released Tomar Aakash in year 2004, a Bengali album with his sister in which he has brought out his dad's unreleased songs.
Shaan has won the MTV Asia Music Awards in 2000 for the Best Solo Album, “Tanha Dil”. He won the Favourite Host in 2009 of “Star Voice of India” a TV reality show. He has won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer for “Jab Se Tere” (Saawariya), “Chand Sifarish” (Fanaa), “Dus Bahane” (Dus), “Koi Kahe” (Dil Chahta Hai) and IIFA awards and Star Screen Awards too. Shaan has recorded the theme song for the IPL team Deccan Chargers. Shaan also performs live on stage and many prominent cult festivals.
