R.D. Burman adapted the tune of the last line of the antaras of the song "Hum Dono Do Premi" ("Ajnabee", 1974) for the flute interlude in this song. He had used a similar tune earlier in the prelude of the song "Chalte Chalte Peechhe Mud Ke Dekh Zara" ("Jaise Ko Taisa", 1973).[1][2]
The second line of this song's mukhda was the second line a couplet by Wajid Ali Shah, the nawab of Awadh from 1847 to 1856. The couplet went "Dar-o-deewaar pe hasrat se nazar karte hain / Khush raho ahl-e-vatan hum to safar karte hain".
