The ‘Father of Qawalli’, Amir Khusro was a 13th century poet, musician and scholar. A disciple of Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya, he is one of the most prominent figures of the Sufi movement in India. Born in Etah, which came under erstwhile princely state of Awadh, he was fluent in both the local dialects - Awadhi and Brij Bhasha - as well as Persian. His poetry is popular to this day amongst Sufis, musicians, poets and film makers.

“Chhap Tilak Sab Chheeni” is perhaps his most celebrated work with several artists rendering it to music - Abida Praveen, Chaya Ganguly and Kailsas Kher. His poem “Ay Sharbat-e-Ashiqui” served as A.R. Rahman’s composition of the popular song “Ay Hairathe” (“Guru”, 2007).
