Hasrat Jaipuri, the Hindi film lyricist and Urdu poet lived from April 15, 1922 to September 17, 1999. Discovered by Prithviraj Kapoor, Jaipuri’s first recorded song was “Jiya Beqaraar Hai” for Raj Kapoor’s romantic musical “Barsaat” (1949). He wrote all of Raj Kapoor’s songs till 1971.
With about 350 films and 2000 recorded songs under his belt, his last release was “Saazish” (1998) with Jatin-Lalit and Sher Khan with Bappi Lahiri in the year 1998. He has been awarded the Filmfare award twice.
Born as Iqbal Husain in Jaipur, he started writing Urdu verse in his late adolescence after he received the ‘taalim’ in Urdu and Persian from his grandfather. “Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar”, popularised by Raj Kapoor through his film “Sangam” (1964), was a poem Jaipuri wrote to his beloved, a girl named Radha, with whom he fell in love in his youth! When he came to Bombay in 1940, he was a bus conductor earning eleven rupees a month. He used to attend ‘mushairas’ and it was at one such event that Privthviraj Kapoor happened to notice him and recommend his talent to Raj Kapoor. Jaipuri came into the industry with “Jiya Beqaraar Hai” (“Barsaat”; 1949) and his first duet was “Chhod Gaye Baalam”.
In the company of Shailendra, all of the lyrics in Raj Kapoor movies until 1971 were written by Jaipuri. With Jaikishan’s death and the consequent failure of “Mera Naam Joker” (1970) and “Kal Aaj aur Kal” (1971), Kapoor turned to other lyricists and music directors. Following this Jaipuri moved on to work with Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi. When Shailendra turned producer with “Teesri Kasam” (1966), Jaipuri was invited to be his lyricist for the song “Maare Gaye Gulfaam”. He has also written the screenplay for the movie “Hulchul” (1951).
Hasrat Jaipuri has won the Filmfare award twice for “Baharon Phool Barsao” (“Suraj”, 1966) and “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana” (“Andaz”, 1972). He was also awarded a doctorate from the World University Round Table. For his contribution to Urdu literature in his capacity of a poet, he was awarded Josh Mahilabadi award from the Urdu Conference. He also received the Dr. Ambedkar Award, for “Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baaje Payaliya” (“Mere Huzoor”, 1968).
Some of his most remembered lines are from “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana” (Andaz), “Teri Pyari Pyari Soorat Ko” (“Sasural”, 1961), “Pankh Hote To Ud Aati Re” (“Sehra”, 1963), “Tere Khayalon Mein Hum” (“Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne”, 1964), “ Tu Kahan Yeh Bataa” (“Tere Ghar Ke Saamne”, 1963), “Muhabbat Aisi Dhadkan Hai” (“Anarkali”, 1953), “Tu Mere Saamne Hai, Teri Zulfein Hai Khuli” (“Suhagan”, 1964), “Nain Se Nain” (“Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje”, 1955), “Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par” (“Junglee”, 1961), “Teri Zulfon Se” (“Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai”, 1961) and “Tum Mujhe Yoon Bhula Na Paaoge” (“Pagla Kahin Ka”, 1970), "Sayonara Sayonara" (“Love In Tokyo”, 1966) and "Aao Twist Karen" (“Bhoot Bungla”, 1965).
