M. G. Hashmat was a lyricist, scriptwriter and assistant director in Hindi films. He was nominated for Best Lyricist at the Filmfare Awards 1975 for the hit song “Mera Jeevan Kora Kagaz” sung by Kishore Kumar in the movie “Kora Kagaz” (1974). However, he won the Bengali Film Journalists’ Association Award for the Best Lyricist in the Hindi Section that year for the same song.
He has penned the lines for songs like “Suniye Janaab, Bolo Memsaab” from the movie “Honeymoon” (1992), “Ghar Se Beghar Kar Gayi” (“Samay Ki Dhara”, 1986), “Ram Hai Mahaan Jag Mein” (“Ram Ki Ganga”, 1984), “Uparwale Teri Dharti” (“Ranga Khush”, 1975) and “Kya Maar Sakegi Maut” “Sanyasi” (1975).
Kalyanji-Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Anand Raj Anand, Pradeep, Ejaz, Tilak Kishore, Jugal Kishore, Shankar-Jaikishan, Raejsh Roshan, Usha Khanna and Anu Malik are some of the music directors he has written songs for. His songs have been sung by the likes of Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Suman Kalyanpur, Asha Bhosle, K.J. Yesudas, Alisha Chinai and Vinod Rathod.
“Prem Aggan” (1998) his last film was released posthumously.
