Originally from Churu, Rajasthan, veteran playback singer Mubarak Begum was raised in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. She was always very fond of films and considered singer Suraiya to be her idol. She learnt music under Riyazuddin Khan and began as a performer with the All India Radio. She tried many a times to sing for films, though her nervousness in front the microphone proved to be an obstacle.

After a few hiccups, she finally debuted with “Mohe Aane Lagi Angrayi” for “Aaiye”. She also sang the duet “Aao Chalein Chalein Sakhi” for the film, along with Lata Mangeshkar.
She wasn’t as prolific a singer as her peers and for various reasons did not earn as much popularity as them. Some of her more popular songs were “Hum Haal-e-dil Sunayenge” (“Madhumati”, 1958), “Kabhi Tanhaiyon Mein” (“Hamari Yaad Aayegi”, 1961), “Mujh Ko Apne Gale Laga Lo” (“Hamrahi”, 1963) and “Neend Ud Jaye Teri” (“Juari”, 1968). In her last years, Mubarak Begum had to depend on financial assistance from the government and the film industry for her living.
