Shreya Ghoshal is one of India’s most successful playback singers. She was born to Bengali parents Bishwajit Ghoshal and Sarmishta Ghoshal on March 12, 1984 in Berhampur, West Bengal, India. Soon after her birth, her parents moved to the sleepy town of Rawatbhata, Rajasthan where she spent the formative years of her life. Shreya’s mother was a singer and spotted talent in her daughter at a early age. Shreya started learning music from her mother when she was 4.
Shreya owes her vocal virtuosity to the many years of formal training she received, starting at age 6, from several teachers including the renowned Kalyanji (of music director Kalyanji-Anandji duo). Her training included playback as well as Hindustani classical singing.
It was in 1995 that she first got attention at the national level by winning the All Indian Light Vocal Music Competition organised by the Sangam Kala group. Many TV opportunities followed including wins in various editions of the popular talent show “Sa Re Ga Ma”.
In 1997, she moved to Mumbai with her family and started recording in regional languages like Marathi and Bengali, while studying and learning music.
Her big break came when Sanjay Leela Bhansali selected her for the movie “Devdas” in 2000. When “Devdas” was released in 2002, the music became hugely popular as well as critically acclaimed. She won the IIFA award and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Devdas for the song, “Dola Re”, as well as Filmfare's RD Burman Award for New Music Talent. She also won the National Film Award for the song "Bairi Piya". Shreya Ghoshal had arrived.
After “Devdas”, she has worked with many music directors and won many awards. She has sung film songs and won awards not only in Hindi but also in Assamesse, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Nepali, Oriya, Tamil, and Telugu. Over the years, her stature as a singer has grown with several awards. She won both the Filmfare and IIFA awards for the Best Female Playback Singer for “Jadu Hai Nasha” from “Jism” (2003) and “Barso Re” from “Guru” (2008), “Teri Ore” from “Singh is Kinng” (2009). She won the National Film Awards for Best Playback Singer for “Dheere Jalna” from “Paheli” (2006), “Yeh Ishq Hai” from “Jab We Met” (2008), "Jeev Dangala" from “Jogwa” (Marathi, 2009) and "Pherari Mon" from “Antaheen” (Bengali, 2009).
Shreya has won many Filmfare Awards in the South too for "Munbe Vaa" from “Sillunu Oru Kaadhal” (Tamil), "Ninna Nodalenthu" from “Mussanjemaatu” (Kannada), "Kizhakku Pookkum" from “Anwar” (Malayalam) and "Un Perai Sollum" from Angadi Theru (Tamil).
Shreya manages to juggle a busy career in music with her TV engagements on shows like Star Voice of India-Chhote Ustaad and X Factor.
