This was considered a landmark film in India's parallel cinema movement. It was Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen's first Hindi film.
This was the first Hindi film of actors Suhasini Mulay, Shekhar Chatterjee, and Sadhu Meher. It was also Amitabh Bachchan's first film credit. He was the film's narrator and did not appear on the screen. According to director Mrinal Sen, he paid the actor Rs. 300 for recording about three minutes of voiceover. Amitabh's first film appearance was in "Saat Hindustani" (1969).[1][2]
The film was based on a Bengali story by Balaichand Mukherjee aka Banaphool.
