The film credited its inspiration to the characters of Rabindranath Tagore's Bengali short story "Kabuliwala" (1892).
In 2012, producer Sunil Doshi had plans of making an adaptation of "Kabuliwala" with Afghan director Atiq Rahimi at the helm. There were plans of approaching Amitabh Bachchan for the lead role. However, the film was shelved. In 2016, Doshi approached Ram Madhvani to revive the film. Madhvani suggested that he approach his colleague Deb Medhekar from the ad agency Equinox instead. This ended up becoming Medhekar's directorial debut. It was one of the five films chosen for the Work-In-Progress lab in Film Bazaar 2016.[1][2][3]
Director Deb Medhekar chose Geetanjali Thapa for the film's lead role because of her resemblance to an actress he was a big fan of - Meena Kumari.[4]
