This was Mahesh Bhatt's directorial debut. Feeling good about the film, Mahesh Bhatt approached director Asit Sen to get his opinion about it. Asit Sen was critical about the film and told him that it lacked depth and substance. Years later, while presenting Mahesh Bhatt an award for the film "Zakhm" (1998), Asit Sen told him that he was his favourite director, and "Daddy" (1991) his favourite film, since it depicted that it was possible to overcome alcoholism, something he had failed at.[1][2][3]
This film is considered ahead of its time because of its bold theme. It explored the relationship between a prostitute and two criminals. The film was held up by the Censor Board for several months before it was cleared. When the film was eventually released, the audience did not accept it, and it remained unnoticed.[4]
This was singer Bhupinder Singh's only Hindi film as a music director. He was credited with his official name for it - Bhupinder Soni.
