This was Shonali Bose's first Hindi film as a director. She had previously directed "Amu" (2005), an English language film set in India. She also co-wrote "Chittagong" (2012) with her husband at the time, Bedabrata Pain. While Bose wrote the first draft of this film herself, later drafts included contributions from Nilesh Maniyar. Their script for the film was selected for the 2012 Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab. Maniyar was credited as the film's co-writer and co-director.[1][2]
The film was inspired by a conversation Shonali Bose had with her cousin Malini Chib, an author and a disability rights activist. Bose was deeply moved when Chib, who had cerebral palsy, told her about her desire to have sex. Later, when Chib's mother asked her to make a film that dealt with disability, Bose decided to explore the topic. The film's lead character, played by Kalki Koechlin, was based on Chib. Koechlin spent a lot of time with Chib to train herself for the role. The film credited its inspiration to Malini Chib. Shonali Bose's own life also influenced the film greatly. Bose started writing the script on what would have been the 17th birthday of her son Ishan, who died in 2010. She dedicated the film to him and her other son, Vivan. She named the banner that co-produced the film after Ishan.[3][4]
