- Director Manish Gupta had initially announced the film as being inspired by what was commonly known as the Aarushi Talwar murder case. The case involved the murder of Aarushi Talwar, a 13-year-old girl, and Hemraj Banjade, a live-in domestic help employed by her parents. The case gained a lot of media attention as it went through many twists and turns. When the film was announced, Ramesh and Nupur Talwar, the parents of Aarushi, were lodged in jail, having been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013. In response to news reports about various books and films said to be based on this case, the Talwars' lawyer threatened legal action against any project that did not have their consent. Gupta clarified then that his film was a work of fiction. The film was certified in January 2014 but got caught in a legal wrangle when the Talwars approached the Bombay High Court and sought a stay on its release till their appeal in the murder case had been heard by the Allahabad High Court. They claimed that Gupta had not responded to their request to view the film and feared that it would be defamatory. After months of arguments, the Bombay High Court finally cleared the film for release in January 2015. The court said in its ruling that "...it cannot be said that the film is an actual depiction of the petitioners' case". The film was released on January 30, 2015. "Talvar" (2015), a film based on the Aarushi Talwar murder case, was released later the same year. The makers of "Talvar" (2015) claimed that they did not take permission from the Talwars but unlike this film, it did not face any legal challenges.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
