Trivia

    Album

  • This film received a nomination for the 79th Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
  • Deepa Mehta had originally cast Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das and Akshay Kumar for this film. During a shoot in Varanasi in 2000, protests against the film went out of hand and the film crew was asked to leave town. The film was temporarily shelved and later completed in 2007 with a different cast consisting of Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray and John Abraham.[MR12]
  • This was the third film of director Deepa Mehta's Elements trilogy. The other films in the series were "Fire" (1996) and "1947 Earth" (1999). All three films had music composed by A.R. Rahman.[1][2]
  • This film was novelised into a book with the same title by Pakistani writer Bapsi Sidhwa. Deepa Mehta and Bapsi Sidhwa had collaborated earlier. Deepa Mehta's film "1947 Earth" (1998) was based on Bapsi Sidhwa's novel "Cracking India".
  • A misunderstanding developed between director Deepa Mehta and actress Nandita Das during the making of this film. Das had worked in Mehta's previous two films in the Elements trilogy - "Fire" (1996) and "1947 Earth" (1998) - and was supposed to work in this film as well. When protests over the film resulted in the work on the film being suspended, Das offered to work in the film without a fee when work resumed. However, when the film's shooting started in 2004, Das was not in the film. A hurt Das had stopped speaking with Mehta but the two reconciled a couple of years later.[3]

    Song

  • Vaishnava Janato - This song was A.R. Rahman's interpretation of a 15th century hymn written by Narsi Bhagat. It was one of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajans.
