Trivia
- The film was based on the novel "Cracking India" by the Pakistani writer Bapsi Sidhwa. The author appeared in the film in a cameo role playing the protagonist Lenny in her old age. Bapsi Sidhwa and Deepa Mehta collaborated again when Bapsi novelised Deepa Mehta's film "Water" (2007).
- This was the second film of director Deepa Mehta's Elements trilogy. The other films in the series were "Fire" (1996) and "Water" (2007). All three films had music composed by A.R. Rahman.[1][2]
- This was the debut film of actor Rahul Khanna, the son of Vinod Khanna and the brother of Akshaye Khanna.
- This film was titled "Earth" internationally. Its title was changed in the Indian release to avoid confusion with the Hindi word "Arth".
